Standard tape widths and liner configurations do not always suit the realities of construction detailing. That is why Lynvale has developed the capability to produce bespoke slit-back (split-liner) airtight tapes in-house, allowing tape dimensions and liner positions to be adapted to specific project requirements.
A recent customer requirement demonstrates the principle particularly well. The project required a 200mm wide plasterable airtight tape with a 20mm–180mm split-back liner. Rather than adapting the detail around an available standard product, we produced the tape to the dimensions required for the application and supplied the finished product within a week.
Why Use a Split-Back Airtight Tape?
A split-back release liner allows different sections of the adhesive surface to be exposed independently. This gives the installer greater control over positioning because one section of the tape can be located and bonded before the remaining liner is removed.
This can be particularly useful when:
- Forming connections between two different substrates
- Sealing internal and external corners
- Working around window and door openings
- Detailing penetrations and service entries
- Working in confined or difficult-to-access areas
- Creating transitions between membranes, boards and other building-envelope components
The split liner effectively allows the installer to control each part of the connection separately, reducing the risk of the adhesive contacting the wrong surface before the tape has been correctly positioned.
Bespoke Split-Liner Configurations
Producing slit-back tapes in-house allows Lynvale to manufacture configurations for particular applications rather than restricting projects to standard liner positions.
Depending on the tape and project requirements, this can include:
- Different finished tape widths
- Specific split-liner positions
- Asymmetrical liner configurations
- Plasterable airtight sealing tapes
- Configurations developed for particular junctions or installation details
For example, a wide tape can be produced with a relatively narrow removable liner on one side and a much wider liner on the other. This allows the installer to establish the initial connection before progressively completing the remainder of the seal.
Supporting Airtightness at Complex Junctions
Bespoke split-liner tapes can be used across a wide range of building-envelope applications, including:
- Sealing vapour control layers (VCLs) and airtight membranes
- Jointing boards and panels
- Sealing around window and door frames
- Detailing penetrations and service entries
- Connecting different substrates at complex junctions
These junctions are often where maintaining continuity of the airtight layer becomes most challenging. Selecting an appropriate tape and liner configuration can make the detail easier to install accurately while helping maintain a continuous connection between adjacent components.
